This high relief, splash-minted coin exhibits precision detail. Die struck out of thicker blanks, this coin will have a substantive feel to it as well. Minted in brass, this coin is given an antique bronze finish then enameled and baked for a beautiful and durable result. The reverse has space available for engraving.
The Air Medal is awarded to any person who, while serving in any capacity in or with the Armed Forces of the United States, shall have distinguished himself/herself by meritorious achievement while participating in aerial flight.
It acknowledges those personnel on current crewmember or non-crewmember flying status that requires them to participate in aerial flight on a regular and frequent basis in the performance of their primary duties.
Presented by all branches of the Armed Forces of the United States, the Air Medal was established by order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1942 and designed by Walker K. Hancock.
